Publication of a Chapter in a Book

Jul 28, 2021

Lucknow Unrestrained: Palimpsest of Incongruous Possibilities is a chapter, co-authored by Sonal Mithal, Visiting Associate Professor, CEPT University, Ahmedabad and Arul Paul, Associate Professor, Nitte Institute of Architecture, in the book Radical City: Imagining Possibilities for the Indian City edited by Pithamber R. Polsani, and published in 2021 by SAGE Publications India, New Delhi.

The text presents Lucknow as a Radical City, a city that does not conform to conventions of polity, gender, religion, education, entertainment, and revolt. Queer Lucknow is a study of the LGBTQ+ histories of the city. The queer archive - books, biographical records, poetry, newspapers, photographs, paintings, illustrations, posters and digital references - is fragmented and when pieced together, reveals the queer histories of Lucknow that counters the formalist understanding of the gendered and sexual histories of the city.
